Hearing on the Rise in Violence Against Minority Institutions

C-SPAN: The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security held a virtual hearing to examine the rise of hate groups and violence directed at minority institutions, with focus on the recent bomb threats directed at HBCUs around the country. Among the witnesses to testify were David Wilson, the president of Morgan State University in Baltimore, and Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker of Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas, who was held hostage on January 15, 2022, with several members of his synagogue by a gunman during an 11-hour standoff with authorities. Several topics were discussed during the hearing including the impact bomb threats have had on students at HBCUs, the role of law enforcement, the rise in hate groups and white supremacy, the role of social media platforms play in radicalization, and how best to protect minority institutions and groups from threats in the future.
