About the Founder & Editor-in-Chief

“From The G-Man is very impressive in concept, design and execution.”  Les Payne

This site is dedicated to the incomparable legacy and extraordinary life of Les Payne. Mr. Payne was a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, co-founder of the National Association of Black Journalists, the former assistant managing editor of Newsday, and a friend and supporter of this news site. May his work be discovered and embraced by aspiring journalists, worldwide, and may he forever rest in peace.

Gary Glennell Toms, “The G-Man,” has received praise as a news platform creator, managing editor and journalist. He served as a columnist, reporter and associate editor for The Wave of Long Island, a publication based in the New York City area, and was appointed the paper’s first and only African-American editor in more than 100 years.

He wrote special features and broke numerous investigative reports that were picked up by award-winning reporters for the New York Daily News, Newsday and the New York Times. One story involved gross mismanagement and serious security breaches at a local CVS pharmacy, which forced national directors for the franchise to develop a new system for destroying and/or safeguarding private information about its customers.

While the aforementioned were instrumental in his development as a journalist, he gained recognition and acclaim from industry peers during his coverage of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the crash of Flight 587. When Flight 587 slammed into the Belle Harbor section of Rockaway, New York, just minutes from the office of The Wave, he was the very first correspondent to speak to a national audience, via the CBS and CNN networks, about the horrific event. Moreover, it’s important to note that during both events, he and his managing editor, Howard Schwach, were solely responsible for covering the tragedies. Between 2001 and 2003, they consistently produced a 90-100 page edition on a weekly basis.

In 2009, he assumed the role of founder and editor-in-chief of “From The G-Man,” a non-profit, independent news and information site that publishes aggregated news content, special features and original investigative reports based on information provided by trusted and vetted sources and contacts at the federal, state and local level. In 2013, he launched “The G-Man Interviews,” a popular series that showcases current news events and uncensored discussions with celebrities, community activists, social/political figures and foreign policy experts. Despite efforts, the news platforms have never received funding and Toms has never been compensated for his catalog of work. The site and podcast series have survived solely on periodic donations from the public and do not accept money from corporations. The latter allows Toms to maintain complete editorial control.

Toms is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and a former member of the Online News Association. His news site and podcast series are responsible for breaking many local and national stories, which include the following:

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered Covid-19 hospital patients be sent to nursing homes, which, according to a nursing home industry insider and whistleblower who appeared on The G-Man Interviews podcast, led to an untold number of seniors contracting and dying from the virus. In the months that followed, a federal investigation was launched and a Cuomo staff member revealed that the administration attempted to conceal the actual number of nursing home residents that died as a result of Cuomo’s directive. During the investigation, a number of elected officials and senior care advocates called for the New York State Department of Health Commissioner, Dr. Howard Zucker, to step down. Shortly after she was sworn into office, From The G-Man submitted a report on Zucker to Governor Kathy Hochul and urged her to review it before rendering a decision on keeping Zucker as health commissioner. Approximately one month after the report was submitted, Governor Hochul called a press conference and announced Zucker had resigned. However, the reason for his resignation was unclear.

A seven-year investigation of the home health care industry in New York revealed how many seniors were being abused or targeted for crimes. The story of the late Naomi Davis, an 80-year-old Brooklyn resident who suffered from Alzheimer’s and dementia and had been abused by inept home health care aides for a number of years, led to an investigation by the Office of the New York State Attorney General.

A series of investigative reports on the NYPD that led to changes in policy and procedure, according to sources within the department who contributed to the reports.

Rikers Island and the fact that it is a powder keg waiting to explode. Two whistleblowers and retirees, a chief deputy U.S. marshal and a New York City Department of Corrections (DOC) captain, appeared on The G-Man Interviews and revealed how incompetence, racism and mismanagement have engulfed and completely corrupted the facility. Eleven days after the episode was published, Cynthia Brann, Commissioner for the New York City Department of Corrections, resigned. The chief of the department retired a few weeks later, and both were named by the DOC captain in the investigative report. The G-Man Interviews has not been able to determine if the report played a role in their departures, but several DOC sources believe that to be the case.

A series of special investigative reports on the white nationalists/white supremacists movement, which included exclusive interviews with former National Socialist Movement leaders Jeff Schoep and Acacia Dietz.

How Marvel Comics, the federal government, corporations and Black billionaires/millionaires are failing current and future STEM program students.

In 2020, From The G-Man published a report on a deeply disturbing policy Twitter implemented that allowed users to access locked accounts. The report explained how the social media company was compromising personal and/or private information, which Twitter requested from users, and why federal law enforcement officials and members of Congress must conduct investigations. On August 23, 2022, a whistleblower came forward and confirmed what From The G-Man had reported.

From The G-Man conducted an exclusive investigation on the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Program in November of 2021, which was later named the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). The report revealed that once the application for the Emergency Broadband Benefit had been submitted and approved, the $50 benefit would not be credited to the customer’s account for two billing cycles.

Additionally, the customer was responsible for paying the service charges incurred during the first two billing cycles, $49.99 per month, and a late fee of nearly $9.00 would be tacked on if a payment was not made by the specified date. In the end, a person on a fixed income or with limited financial resources would incur a $170.00 debt before the monthly $50 benefit was applied to the account. This included the $49.99 charge to have the tech visit the home and install the equipment. Additional charges, such as activation fees, would also be applied.

After the report was published, it was shared with the White House via its Twitter account. It was also shared with a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) official, who immediately submitted a response. In May of 2022, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris announced that Internet providers would offer significant discounts to people in impoverished communities.

In 2022, The G-Man Interviews featured “Sister Bisi,” the executive director of Imani House (IHI), and four parents, Shanna Garrick, Carmen Caraballo, Yarniris Fernandez and Tiffani Hope, whose children were removed from the Summer Rising program at Camp Imani without justification or warning by the Department of Youth and Community Development, also known as DYCD, and the Department of Education. The children, who are Black and Brown and live in low-income communities, were replaced by white children from wealthy families. Sister Bisi and the mothers provided details, and the executive director also revealed Mayor Eric Adams, elected officials in her district, and the noted agencies did nothing in the wake of the removals. Shortly after the episode was published, New York State Senator Jabari Brisport submitted a letter of inquiry to the office of Mayor Adams and the aforementioned agencies. An investigation was conducted, and the majority of Camp Imani children were reinstated in 2023. Sister Bisi was also honored as a New York State Senate Woman of Distinction for 2022.

In 2023, From The G-Man launched a special feature series on the war in Ukraine entitled From the War Zone, which showcases in-depth reports from the cities and towns where the fiercest fighting is taking place. The reports are filed by award-winning journalist Askold Krushelnycky in collaboration with From The G-Man. Krushelnycky was born in Britain to Ukrainian parents. His work has appeared in many publications, including the Independent, Sunday Times and International Herald Tribune.

In addition to providing stellar news coverage through his independent news platforms, his central focus is to bring communities together and showcase their beauty and diversity. He is a recipient of multiple journalism and community service awards. His acclaimed news sites also focus on bridging the gap between communities of color and police departments throughout the United States.

Toms is managed by Ira H. Leibowitz, and merger or partnership offers from celebrities and U.S. or foreign news organizations will be strongly considered.

Additional Information

“I know ‘The G-Man’ behind the mic and before the mic. He’s in control, focused and informed. Being interviewed by him is truly a learning adventure about our profession as journalists and what drives us to tell people the story. In terms of this site and ‘The G-Man Interviews,’ I’d say ‘ground-breaking’ sums it up.” – Tom Osborne, former producer for “ABC’s World News Tonight…with Peter Jennings,” “20/20,” “Good Morning, America,” and host/producer of “US World Report”

“I’ve been keeping up with the updates from the website and From The G-Man has been producing awesome work and keeping me informed. We need more news organizations like From The G-Man.” – Cheryl Thompson-Morton, Black Media Initiatives Director, Center for Community Media

“The G-Man has single-handedly created and sustained a unique and invaluable news resource for New York City and the nation. His exclusives and analyses are a must for all concerned citizens. My appearances on The G-Man Interviews were truly enjoyable, and I’ve always found his journalism to be insightful, fearless, and first-rate.” – Charles K. Armstrong, author, historian and scholar of contemporary Asia

“I’ve followed From The G-Man and The G-Man Interviews for many years, and their incredible catalog of original investigative reports is a major reason why I continue to urge as many people as possible to visit and support the independent news sites. The fact that From The G-Man, a small and unfunded platform based in Harlem, was solely responsible for breaking the story about Governor Andrew Cuomo ordering Covid-19 hospital patients be sent to nursing homes, in addition to other major stories, is nothing short of amazing and a clear illustration of the critical role independent journalism plays in America. After operating for more than a decade without ever being compensated for his painstaking work, I consider him a humanitarian and one of the greatest newsmen in America.” – Lloyd Strayhorn, World-renowned astro-numerologist, author and radio/television personality

“I have been interviewed numerous times by ‘The G-Man.’ Each interview was very enjoyable on my behalf because he gives you the opportunity to fully express your philosophical beliefs whether he agrees or disagrees. I was honored in the past to do many interviews and I’d be honored to do more in the future. He is very thorough and conscientious.” – Michael R. Long, Former Chairman of the Conservative Party of New York State
