Midterm Election Analysis

By Alan Singer

I want to start with the good news from Tuesday’s midterm election.

There was a Blue Wave. Democrats took control of the House, Senate and a majority of the state houses. This was a massive repudiation of Donald Trump and Elon Musk who spent almost half a billion dollars backing losing candidates. Other big losers were crypto, AI, data centers, and online gambling companies and the powerful pro-Israel lobby.

There is much to celebrate. This was definitely a win for democracy and diversity. Democrats won in states like Kansas, Iowa, South Carolina and Texas where no Democrat had been elected to the Senate in decades. A Muslim candidate was elected to the Senate in Michigan despite a nasty Islamophobic campaign financed by pro-Israel groups and joined by JD Vance. An African American woman was elected Governor of Georgia. A Mexican American woman was elected governor in Texas, and a Mexican American man was elected Governor of California. A Native American woman was elected Governor of New Mexico, am Indigenous woman is leading in the still undecided Alaska Senate campaign, and three Black men were elected governors, although one was a rightwing Republican. The Republican candidate for Governor in Ohio lost after he ran what may be the nasty campaign ad ever accusing his opponent who was a rape victim when she was 12 years old of lying about it.
