This Land Is Our Land

An estimated five million people joined more than 2,000 “No Kings” marches and rallies across the United States and they were joined by people around the world. They were celebrations of what democracy and the United States Constitution mean. In New York City where I marched some people wore colorful costumes and others carried outrageous protest signs, my favorite was “Beware of Ticks; Deer Ticks, Dog Tick and Luna-ticks with a picture of Donald Trump. In an explosion of joy, we were “Dancing in the Street” to a Martha & The Vandellas song from the sixties.

Republican Party Speaker of the House Mike Johnson dismissed the marches as “Hate America rallies” led by “Marxists” with ties to Hamas and antifa. He clearly missed the millions of Americans who marched in defense our country against people like him who want to destroy fundamental rights and freedoms.

Despite what Johnson and Donald Trump may think, the 14th Amendment to the Constitution passed over 150 years ago in 1868 states that anyone born within the jurisdiction of the United States and subject to its laws is a citizen of this country and that all people, not just citizens or documented immigrants, are guaranteed due legal process.
