A Message from Con Edison: What You Need to Know About Gas Safety

Our crews are working 24/7 to keep you safe by upgrading our gas system and drilling for emergencies. Help keep your home and community safe by knowing the danger signs of gas leaks.

1. Smell Gas? Act Fast.

Make sure you and your family know what to do if you suspect a gas leak. Even if the smell is not strong, a leak can result in an explosion and fire.

Smell: Natural gas smells like rotten eggs.

Gas: If gas is in the air, a spark could cause an explosion. Don’t light a match, smoke, flip a switch, ring a doorbell, or touch appliances or electronics, including phones.

Leave: If you suspect a gas leak, get everyone out immediately.

Call: When you’re safely away from the area, call 911, Con Edison (1‑800‑75‑CONED) or National Grid (1‑718‑643‑4050). Never assume someone else will call. You can report leaks anonymously.

2. Call 811 Before You Dig

Planning some yardwork? Hitting a gas line with your shovel or other equipment can seriously injure you.

Call 811 two to 10 days before you do any digging (it’s the law).

Utilities will mark the location of lines for free.

Know what’s underground before you start work.
