Congressional Black Caucus News Conference on Redistricting

The briefing was held on September 9. 

C-SPAN: Congressional Black Caucus members held a news conference on redistricting battles happening in several states, including Texas, California, and Missouri. They expressed their concerns about African American enfranchisement, the future of U.S. democracy, and an upcoming Supreme Court case involving the Voting Rights Act. Texas was the first state to change its U.S. congressional map upon the request of President Donald Trump, in order to give his Republican Party a numerical advantage in keeping power ahead of the 2026 elections. To counter this and stay competitive, California Democrats then advanced their own redistricting legislation. At the time of this event, Missouri Republicans were the latest group to advance redistricting legislation, which would affect Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s (D-MO) chances of getting reelected, one of the members who spoke at this briefing.
