Gov. Newsom Announces Response to GOP Gerrymandering Efforts
This event was originally broadcast on August 14.
C-SPAN: Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) announced that the voters of California would decide in a special election in November on whether to redistrict congressional maps for the state’s elections taking place in 2026, 2028, and 2030. This was in response to Texas’ GOP redistricting efforts, which began with President Donald Trump calling on Texas to add five safe Republican congressional seats to its map. “We have got to recognize the cards that have been dealt, and we have got to meet fire with fire,” urged Newsom. He was joined by Sens. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Alex Padilla (D-CA), Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA), and leaders of various organizations representing teachers, labor unions, and reproductive rights. This took place at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
