On May 28, From The G-Man (FTG) emailed the company’s corporate office in Phoenix, Arizona, and posed several questions about the situation. The office was also contacted in order to find out how U-Haul could prevent similar incidents going forward. Jeff Lockridge, Manager of Media and Public Relations, submitted the following responses via email.
FTG: Are customers required to submit REAL IDs in order to rent your trucks?
Lockridge: It takes a government-issued driver’s license to rent a U-Haul truck, and the renter must be 18 years of age or 16 to rent a trailer.
FTG: Can the license plates on the trucks be easily removed?
Lockridge: I have never attempted to remove a license plate, so I cannot speak to that. We have an equipment identification number on the top right front and top right back of our trucks for confirmation to match any customer contract.
FTG: Is there anything the company can do to prevent the unlawful transport of these group members from one state to the next?
Lockridge: Once a rental is dispatched, it is in the customer’s possession until the equipment is returned. Action was taken immediately by our teams on Saturday, May 24. Once we received license plate numbers and confirmation that our equipment had been misused, the customers on the contracts were banned from doing business with us. They breached the terms of the rental contract by transporting people in the cargo area. They no longer have rental privileges.
Of course, we do not support this group and what they represent. We have no desire to be affiliated with them in any way.
There are no names of activist organizations on our rental contracts. There are only names of individual customers. Perhaps those individuals are renting on behalf of a group, and there is absolutely no way for us to know that. When an individual reserves rental equipment, we do not ask the customer about their political affiliations, religious views, voting history, income level, educational background, housing situation, relationships, race, gender, sexual preferences, or any other private information that is none of our business. Our customers reflect every walk of life and represent every demographic across the U.S. and Canada.
If an individual is in good standing with us, we will rent to them. If an individual commits illegal acts using our equipment, misuses our equipment, or violates their rental contract, we reserve the right to take away their rental privileges. That happened in this instance.
