Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Announces Resignation

C-SPAN: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he will resign as prime minister and Liberal Party leader once his party selects a new leader. To do this, he ordered Parliament to be suspended until March 24 in order for his party to choose his replacement. The outgoing prime minister, who has been in office since November 2015, faced growing criticism within his party following the resignation of Chrystia Freeland as deputy prime minister and finance minister. In her resignation letter, Ms. Freeland cited her differences with Mr. Trudeau over how to deal with President-elect Donald Trump’s 25% tariff threat. Canada’s next federal election must be held by October 20. This news conference took place at the prime minister’s residence of Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.
