It is with great sorrow and regret that the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) informs its members and the entire Ukrainian American community that on 10 August 2024, Stefan Kaczaraj, long-time Chair of UCCA’s National Council, passed away at the age of 83.

Stefan Kaczaraj was born on 11 April 1941, in the Ukrainian village of Verbytsya, and spent his formative years in Ulm, Germany, until eventually emigrating to the United States in 1955. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1968, Stefan began a career as a public accountant before joining the Ukrainian National Association (UNA) in 1993. He served the UNA for almost 30 years, including as an executive officer for more than 25 years. Stefan Kaczaraj was elected UNA President at its 35th Regular Convention in 2002, a position he held until his retirement in 2022.

At the beginning of this century, Stefan Kaczaraj played an instrumental role in returning UNA to its prominent role within the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, and was repeatedly elected as Chair of UCCA’s National Council (Krayova Rada) at the 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd Congresses of Ukrainians in America.

In addition to his years of service with the UNA and UCCA, Stefan’s life evidenced an unwavering dedication to the Ukrainian American community, with leadership roles at a number of community organizations. These included serving as a director of the Self Reliance NY Federal Credit Union for more than 30 years, with a period as its Chairman of the Board. Stefan was also a founding board member of the Soyuzivka Foundation, and an active member of the Ukrainian Chorus “Dumka” of New York, The Ukrainian Museum in New York, the Ukrainian Institute of America, and the Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization (as a member of the Chervona Kalyna fraternity) among other organizations.

UCCA sends its sincerest condolences to Stefan’s wife Sania, his children Adriana and Talia with their families, his sister Maria and her family, all extended family members and friends, as well as the entire Ukrainian American community for their great loss.
