A Bash in Brooklyn: Linden Houses Celebrates Family Day 2024
The flag was raised in honor of veterans in the community and abroad.

Linden Family Day is an event for long-time and newly-transplanted residents of the Linden Houses. On August 3, both came out to show support for the community by taking part in what has become an annual celebration.
Many of the children enjoyed themselves by participating in a variety of games and happily munching on cotton candy. The temperature was stifling, but every precaution was taken to make sure elderly residents were comfortable. I had the pleasure of sitting with a number of them while they shared fascinating stories about growing up in the complex.

New York City Councilman Chris Banks

Assemblywoman Nikki Lucas, New York City Councilman Chris Banks, Deputy Borough President Kim Council and Linden Houses Tenant Association President Carol Barnes also attended the celebration. The music was provided by DJ Crossover.

Additionally, a station was set up for voters who were not registered for the upcoming election. Many of the attendees I chatted with were extremely excited about Kamala Harris’ historic bid for the White House.

Former New York City Councilman Charles Barron dropped by to support the event and community. He represented District 42 from 2022 to 2023 and previously held the same seat from 2002 to 2013.

A station was set up by members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) to share information about fire prevention and safety. Staff members of the Linden Houses and retired New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) employees were also in attendance.

Ms. Naomi Davis
On a personal note, my late mother, Naomi Davis, attended this event every year since 1998. She really enjoyed it and always looked forward to gathering with members of the community, young and old, each year. She passed away in 2018, and I suspect many residents miss her conversation, smile and warmth. I certainly do.
Without question, Linden Family Day 2024 served as a reminder of what is possible when family and friends come together to celebrate their community and this great country.
