Rep. Tom McClintock Urges Against Effort to Remove Speaker McCarthy
C-SPAN: California Republican criticizes members of his party who have voted against spending legislation, including Rep. Matt Gaetz who is threatening a motion to vacate the chair in an effort to remove Kevin McCarthy as speaker. He warns that such a motion would move the House to the Left under a “coalition speaker” and “effectively end the House Republican majority that the people elected in 2022.” McClintock pleads with his colleagues not to go ahead with their motion but to “look past their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion, their local interests, and their selfish views, and to make a wise decision when it’s needed most at this critical moment in the life of our country.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz Hints at Possible Motion to Vacate the Chair Later This Week
C-SPAN: Florida Republican Representative Matt Gaetz suggests there could be a possible motion to vacate the chair later this week, thereby forcing votes on Speaker McCarthy’s future. Rep. Gaetz criticizes the speaker’s leadership and demands to know if a deal was made on Ukraine aid, saying that Ukraine has lost the support of the “majority of the majority.” “It is going to be difficult for my Republican friends to keep calling President Biden feeble while he continues to take Speaker McCarthy’s lunch money in every negotiation,” Gaetz says. Aid for Ukraine was not included in a bill to fund the government and avert a shutdown over the weekend. However, aid for the war effort is expected to be voted upon later this fall.
