Reel Sisters & ImageNation Conduct Filmmaker’s Workshop in Harlem

By Gary Glennell Toms
On June 24, Reel Sisters and ImageNation held a filmmaker’s workshop at Harlem School of the Arts and presented family-friendly films during their “Family Day” event. The workshop taught community residents, particularly youngsters and teens, how to make films by simply using their smart phones.
According to its website, “Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series is the first Academy Qualifying Festival for Short narratives devoted to showcasing films produced, directed and written by women of color. The festival accepts all genres and formats with a special interest in submissions from animated and web series producers. Films co-directed, co-produced or co-written with a male filmmaker are eligible for submission. Reel Sisters is rated top three in Film Daily’s 10 best internationally recognized women centered film festivals.”

Similarly, “ImageNation Cinema Foundation is an innovative Harlem-based non-profit created to develop cinemas and audiences for independent films and music, that depict the global Black experience. ImageNation’s goal is to empower Black communities by presenting a variety of public programs that foster media equity, media literacy, solidarity, cross-cultural exchange and highlight the humanity of Pan-African people worldwide.”
