Hearing on Crypto-Asset Mining and Environment
C-SPAN: Crypto-asset mining and its impact on the environment were discussed at a Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee hearing. Witnesses from both sides testified on energy consumption and efficiency, cryptocurrency mining sites causing air, water, and noise pollution, and the potential for overregulating the cryptomining industry. “In the United States, carbon dioxide emissions for bitcoin mining are equivalent to the annual emissions from as many as 7.5 million gasoline-powered cars,” said Chair Ed Markey (D-MA). The senator recently proposed the Crypto-Asset Environmental Transparency Act, which would require cryptomining companies to disclose their emissions levels.
