The GGE Update: In My Black Feminist Bag – Celebrating Black Women

Zora Neale Hurston

By Toni Wilson

Dear Community,

From Joan Morgan to Zora Neale Hurston to Lil Kim to Beyoncé and even Megan Thee Stallion, Black women have always been at the helm of all feminist movements and have always allowed their art to speak for their experiences and how they see the world. In our work, it’s important to shift the culture for Black girls and get deeper into what’s bringing them joy, how they want to be seen, and the stories they wish to tell about themselves. We are launching “In My Black Feminist Bag,” an IG live series for Black Futures Month + Womxn’s Herstory Month discussing the culture of Black girls, the state of Black girls, and what’s important for Black girls to have in their “bag” as a Bad Black girl! The objective of this IG Live series:

Serve to showcase the ways Black feminism serves as the foundation for how cis and trans-Black girls and gender-expansive young people experience the world around them

Underscore that Black feminism is accessible and expression of Black Feminism is not a monolith

Making Black feminism and themes covered in programs such as colorism, classism, intersectionality, homophobia, etc. more tangible for young people and potential GGE supporters viewing

Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) will be collaborating with 8 contributors across different sectors of work such as media, entertainment, grassroots activism, spirituality, etc. Contributors will cover themes impacting the lives of Black girls such as mental health and suicide ideation, healing from trauma and how to tap into feeling good, self-esteem, gender-based violence, young parenting, and more. These eight IG Live Series will be interview/conversation-style including GGE young people as well as external contributors.

We’re happy to recognize Wildfang as a sponsor for the In My Black Feminist Bag series. Born in 2013 of the desire for real pockets & button-ups without a boob gap, our mission is deceptively simple: to live (and dress) in reckless abandon of gender norms designed to hold us back. We’re here for all the multifaceted magic you possess: your masculine, your feminine, and your everything in between. Let’s usher in a new future of gender—one that’s bigger, better, and bolder than the binary.

Girls for Gender Equity works intergenerationally, through a Black feminist lens, to center the leadership of Black girls and gender-expansive young people of color in reshaping culture and policy through advocacy, youth-centered programming, and narrative shift to achieve gender and racial justice. GGE is a non-profit organization based in Brooklyn, New York leading local, state, and national work.
