Dr. John B. King Appointed 15th SUNY Chancellor

Statement from SUNY Student Assembly President and Trustee Alexandria Chun

This morning, the SUNY Board of Trustees moved to appoint Dr. John B. King Jr. as the System’s 15th Chancellor. I write with my wholehearted endorsement of this as I believe Dr. King will hear, understand, and serve our students with compassion.

A lifelong educator and former U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. King has proven over his long career that he prioritizes some of the core issues that matter most to us as students. As student debt has grown over the past few decades into a national crisis, he has shown time and again that he prioritizes college affordability as a platform for future success, closing opportunity gaps for students of color and low-income students, and excellence in education.

Dr. King is a true New Yorker and a product of our public schools, serving before his position in the Federal Government as the first African American and Puerto Rican New York State Education Commissioner.

Chancellor King will officially join us next month; we are deeply confident that the System is well positioned to navigate the future with him at the helm. Please join me in giving him a warm welcome to the SUNY family.

Alexandria Chun is a Junior at Binghamton University where she studies Politics, Philosophy, and Law with a Minor in Economics. Chun serves as the President of the SUNY Student Assembly, the official organization by which students participate in University-wide shared governance, representing the 64 campuses of the SUNY system.
