Black is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Braithwaite on Display at NY Historical Society

On behalf of Voza Rivers/New Heritage Theatre Group and The Harlem Arts Alliance, Walker International Communications Group (WICG) is pleased to invite you and your friiends to Black is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite, an exhibition on view now at the New-York Historical Society.

Join us in celebrating Kwame Braithwaite on October 21 at 6 p.m. acknowledging his monumental contributions to arts and culture in our Harlem community.

This is the first major exhibition dedicated to an influential figure of the second Harlem Renaissance who helped pilot the “Black is Beautiful” movement during the 1960s.

The exhibition features 40 large-scale color and black-and-white photographs that exemplify how Brathwaite used his photography as an agent of social and cultural change, while documenting the stories of the Black men and women who changed the political and cultural landscape by challenging notions of beauty and disenfranchisement.

Organized by Aperture in partnership with Braithwaite’s son Kwame S. Brathwaite, director of the Kwame Brathwaite Archive, the photographs, mostly shot in Harlem and the Bronx, tell a story of a movement and a time.

Kwame S. Brathwaite will be at the event to accept the award.
