Hearing on Oversight of Federal Bureau of Prisons

C-SPAN: Colette Peters, director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, testified on oversight of the agency before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senators questioned her on reports of sexual abuse committed by prison staff on inmates, living conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and other issues. Director Peters was sworn in on August 2, 2022. The committee also heard from individuals with experience in the federal prison system, including Cecilia Cardenas, a former inmate who shared her story about being incarcerated and how she benefited from the CARES and First Step Acts; and labor union president Shane Fausey, who said the prison staffing shortage was “a crisis of epic proportions.”
