Governor Abbott News Conference on School Shooting in Uvalde, Texas

C-SPAN: Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) said he was “misled” about the response of local police to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and said he is “absolutely livid” about it, calling for a rigorous investigation into what happened. His remarks came during a news conference about the shooting. Earlier in the week, Governor Abbott praised law enforcement’s response, but has since walked back those comments as new developments unfold. He also explained that free mental health resources are available to anyone who needs them and announced the OneStar Foundation fund to assist those affected by the tragedy. Several state officials also spoke, explaining how their respective agencies are helping the community in and around Uvalde. Finally, Governor Abbott said he expects laws to change, particularly in regard to making schools safer and addressing mental health care but balked at the idea of universal background checks.
