Holocaust Survivors Honored at Dedication Ceremony

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — “My mother was killed and seeing her picture it means so much,” said Eva Brettler, a Holocaust survivor who was photographed holding a framed picture of her mother. Brettler was one of over 30 Holocaust survivors who gathered at the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance on Thursday for a special event in their honor.

For over four decades, Holocaust surviors have spoken about their experiences with museum visitors, members of the public, students, and others at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance.

A highlight of the event was the dedication of the final Witness to Truth portrait gallery, with portraits of Holocaust survivors by Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalist Marissa Roth, dedicated by Elana & S. Zachary Samuels.

During a moving ceremony at the Museum of Tolerance, these survivors, who are the most important ambassadors of memory and remembrance, were honored for their years of dedication.

Rabbi Marvin Hier, SWC Founder and CEO, warned those gathered to, “….Look out at our world, that it is a mere 80 years later from the events of the Holocaust, look how many haters, bigots and anti-Semites have infested the United States and Europe. Look at Russia’s Putin and what he is doing. And look at the Ayatollahs of Iran who pray for another Holocaust.”

Rabbi Marvin Hier, SWC Founder and CEO, conducts an interview about the event.

He thanked the survivors for their work and for imparting the lessons of tolerance and human dignity to the hundreds of thousands, young and old, who have come to the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Museum of Tolerance.
