Darnell Weaver Named First Black State Police Superintendent in Rhode Island

Today, Governor Dan McKee announced that Darnell Weaver, currently the number two officer at the Rhode Island State Police, will assume the rank of Colonel and position of Superintendent, after the retirement of Col. James Manni.

Weaver, a 27-year veteran of the State Police, as Colonel, becomes the first person of color to ever be appointed to the position, and will now lead the state police and the state’s Department of Public Safety, which oversees the Division of Sheriffs, the 911 telephone system, the Capitol police, the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy, and the Public Safety Grants Administration Office.

He is to be officially sworn in on Friday, April 29 at the Rhode Island State House.
