‘Mayor of Chinatown’ Justin Yu Endorses Salas For Assembly in 65AD
As petitioning begins, Justin Yu (Democratic District Leader), who has been called “Mayor of Chinatown” and just completed his term as President of the Chinese Community Benevolent Association, endorsed Denny Salas for State Assembly.
“Denny knows the issues facing our community. His priorities include making housing truly affordable, expanding gifted and talented programs, putting public safety first, and increasing grants to small businesses so our community can recover from the pandemic. I enthusiastically endorse Denny to represent us in Albany,” said Yu.
“I am honored to earn the endorsement of Mr. Justin Yu!” said Salas.
Salas continues, “Justin’s career as a journalist, author, and fierce advocate for Chinatown has spawned decades. And when this community – serving people of every color or creed – needed a leader during the pandemic, it was Mr. Yu who worked tirelessly to deliver food, security, masks, vaccines, and anything you can imagine to keep Lower Manhattan functioning as best as it could while president of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association.
All I know is that if I can accomplish 10% of what Justin’s done throughout his life, then I will be one of the most effective legislators New York has ever seen.”
This comes at the heels of United Democratic Organization’s endorsement, the political club that launched Yuh-Line Niou’s successful campaign for Assembly.
Salas is a proud first-generation American, husband, and father-to-be, whose immigrant story is like many New Yorkers: He grew up in poverty, collected cans for money, and in a case of arson, his family almost lost their lives when someone set their home on fire while they were inside.
Despite those challenges, his family believed in the American Dream. Salas has stated that he is running for Assembly to make sure Albany prioritizes working families, small businesses owners, and mom-and-pop small property landlords in Lower Manhattan so they can achieve that dream too.
