A Call to Support Advertising Equity for New York Community Media

The following statement was submitted by By Darlie Gervais, Advertising Boost Initiative Coordinator at the Center for Community Media (CCM).

Dear Publishers and Broadcasters,

The Center for Community Media at the CUNY Newmark Graduate School of Journalism is pleased to share with you an open letter asking New York Governor Kathy Hochul to commit to equity in advertising from the state’s government agencies. The letter follows the New York City Council’s passing of Local Law 83 of 2021 to permanently commit at least 50% of all city government advertising dollars to community media, and to create the state’s first-ever Mayor’s Office of Ethnic and Community Media.

As a member of community media in the state of New York, please join publishers and broadcasters in this call for advertising equity from state agencies.

Read the letter here. To add your name and outlet, fill in this form, no later than Thursday, February 17, 2022.

In 2020, CCM launched its Advertising Boost Initiative (ABI) to serve as a bridge between NYC outlets, city agencies and advertising agencies. CCM has released an update on ABI’s finding of city ad spending in the second year of the project. The city allocated $15.6 million in community media in 2021, an increase of more than $5 million from 2020.

If you need a PDF of this updated summary please contact me at darlie.gervais@journalism.cuny.edu.

CCM is urging all of you to publish the report’s update and the letter in this week’s publication and broadcast.
