New Yorkers Invited to Place Memorial Day Flags on the Graves of Veterans at Maple Grove Cemetery

The following was submitted by Friends of Maple Grove.

This year we will have flags available at the front desk in the Center at Maple Grove for anyone who wishes to plant flags at the graves of our veterans. Access to the center is available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the flags will be available from May 22 through May 29. The building is closed on Sundays and on Memorial Day.

Take a walk at your leisure through any of the sections and find the marked graves of our veterans. This is a wonderful service project for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, families and children of all ages. There are hundreds of veterans at Maple Grove who proudly noted their service on their grave markers and those we honor and remember on Memorial Day for giving their lives in service to our country.

Our service members are in every section of the cemetery. Some have flat bronze markers, others have upright military stone monuments or are included on large family gravestones or have separate metal markers indicating membership in veterans organizations. We have service members from every conflict going back to the War of 1812, the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Dessert Storm, Afghanistan and others.

We recommend that you bring a long screwdriver to create a hole to insert the flag. The screwdriver should be enough to create the hole. It is not recommended to use a hammer on the flag as it might break the stick, but you can use a small hammer to tap the end of the screwdriver if needed.

Thank you to all who take part in honoring our soldiers this Memorial Day.
