З великим сумом і жалем, Український Конґресовий Комітет Америки (УККА) повідомляє своїх членів та цілу українсько-американську громаду, що зранку 26 червня 2024 року в Варшаві помер очільник Союзу Українських Організацій Австралії (СУОА), Стефан Романів.
It is with great sorrow and regret that the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America informs its members and the Ukrainian American community that on 26 June 2024, the Co-Chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO), Stefan Romaniw, passed away while in Warsaw.
Тільки щойно брав участь у І-му Всесвітньому Конгресі Антиімперського Блоку Народів (АБН), який проходив 21-22 червня цього року у литовському місті Каунасі. На цьому Конгресі, Стефан був обраний першим Віце-президентом відновленим АБНом.
Stefan had just finished a visit to Kaunas, Lithuania, to attend the First Congress of the Anti-imperial Block of Nations (ABN), held on 21-22 June, where he had been elected Vice-President of ABN.
Протягом свого життя, друг Стефан був активним СУМівцем, і став головою СУМівського осередку в Мельбурні, очільником Крайової Управи СУМ в Австралії, першим заступником голови Світової Управи СУМ, здобув IV ступінь Виховника, особливе відзначення “Дружинник – Витязь” і статус Почесного члена СУМ в Австралії.
Throughout his life, Stefan was an active member of the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM), leading the local CYM Oseredok in Melbourne, then the Krayova Uprava of CYM in Australia, becoming the Vice-Chair of the Svitova Uprava of CYM, and achieving the lifetime status of Honorary Member of CYM in Australia.
З 2008 по 2018, був Генеральним секретарем, а з 2018 Першим заступником Президента Світового Конґресу Українців (СКУ), як і головою Міжнародного Координаційного Комітету СКУ в справі Голодомору і головою Світової ради СКУ з релігійних питань.
From 2008-2018 he served as the Secretary General of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), and from 2018 he has served as the First Vice President of the UWC, while also serving as Chair of the UWC International Committee for Recognition of Holodomor as Genocide as well as Chair of the UWC International Religious Affairs Committee.
Почувши що Стефан помер, прем’єр-міністр Австралії Ентоні Альбанезе, лідер опозиції Австралії Пітер Даттон, міністр закордонних справ Пенні Вонг, Тіньовий міністр закордонних справ Саймон Бірмінгем та багато інших політичних і громадських лідерів Австралії, включно колишніх прем’єр-міністри Австралії Тоні Еббот та Скотт Моррісон, публічно прославляли його життя.
Upon news of his passing, Stefan Romaniw was publicly saluted by Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, its Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton, its Foreign Minister Penny Wong, its Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Birmingham, and many other Australian political and civic leaders, including former Prime Ministers Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison.
Серед багатьох нагород, які він отримав за свою невтомну працю, були найвище відзначення Світового Конґресу Українців, медаль «Святого Володимира Великого», відзнака Президента України «Орден Ярослава Мудрого» V ступеня, ювілейний медаль Президента України «25 років незалежності України», та Медаль ордена Австралії (OAM).
Among the many awards he received for his tireless work were the Ukrainian World Congress’ highest accolade, the St. Volodymyr the Great Medal, Ukrainian State Honors the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise and the Order of Merit from the President of Ukraine, as well as the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), “for service to education and language learning through the coordination and provision of services for people from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds.”

Professor Taras Hunczak
1 липня 2024 помер знаний історик, політолог, багатолітній редактор журналу «Сучасність» та квартальника УККА «The Ukrainian Quarterly», дійсний член Наукового товариства імені Шевченка (НТШ) та Української вільної академії наук (УВАН), професор Тарас Гунчак.
On 1 July 2024, the famed historian, political scientist, long-time contributor and editor of UCCA’s “The Ukrainian Quarterly,” and member in good standing of both the Shevchenko Scientific Society (NTSh) and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences (UVAN), Professor Taras Hunczak, passed away in his sleep at the age of 92.
Народився у Старому Місті, передмісті Підгайців, Тернопільської області. З літку 1944 не повернувся на батьківщину лише після відновлення незалежності України.
He was born in Stare Misto, on the outskirts of Pidhaitsi, in the Oblast of Ternopil. After departing in 1944, he did not return to his homeland until after the restoration of Ukraine’s independence.
Отримавши ступінь доктора історії Східної Європи, він прийняв посаду в Університеті Ратґерса в Нью-Джерсі, де став директором програми східноєвропейських і радянських досліджень, та завідувачем історичного факультету Університету Ратґерса. Він продовжив свою освіту подорожуючи світом, брав участь у багатьох міжнародних конференціях, і його численні статті були опубліковані по всьому світу.
After earning a doctorate in East European history, he accepted a position at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he became director of the East European and Soviet Studies program, and Chair of the Rutgers History Department. He would continually further his education by traveling the world and attending many International Conferences and authored many articles and volumes.
Викладаючи історію в коледжі, професор Гунчак також знайшов час, щоб розробити волейбольну програму. Його команда виграла Чемпіонат Сходу США та друге місце в національному чемпіонаті NAIA в 1976 році. Неймовірні досягнення Гунчака як тренера команди принесли Ратґерсу національне, як і міжнародне визнання. У 1977 році він створив успішну жіночу волейбольну команду, яка за короткий час також стала університетською.
While he taught History at the college level, Professor Hunczak also found the time to create a Division I volleyball program. His team won the East Coast Championship and placed second in the NAIA National Championship in 1976. Because of Hunczak’s incredible accomplishments as a team coach, Rutgers gained both national and international recognition. In 1977, he developed a successful Women’s Team, which also became a Varsity team within a short period of time.
Серед державних нагород які отримав професор Гунчак, були відзначення як «Заслужений діяч науки і техніки України» від Президента України як і орден «За заслуги» III ступеня.
Among the state awards he received was the recognition of Professor Hunczak as an “Honored Science and Technology Figure of Ukraine” by the President of Ukraine, as well as the Order of Merit of Ukraine.
