Mayor Eric Adams recently stated he was “the symbol of Black manhood” in New York City and the country. In 2021, Adams proclaimed he was “the future of the Democratic Party.” From The G-Man would like to make several points regarding the polly’s (politician’s) declarations.
First of all, what he should have said was ….”I am a symbol of Black manhood.” By stating he was “the” symbol, he showed a blatant disrespect for many Black men in leadership positions throughout New York City, the state and the country. Congressman Jamaal Bowman, the Rev. Al Sharpton, of the National Action Network, Marc Morial, President of the National Urban League, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams are just a few that come to mind, and many in communities of color consider them symbols of Black manhood. That said, what gives the mayor the right to think he is the symbol of Black manhood when so many others have played pivotal roles in this city, state and country, in terms of implementing landmark legislation, protecting civil rights, and speaking truth to power? The answer? Nothing! If Adams continues to act this way, From The G-Man believes things will get extremely interesting when he seeks endorsements for a second term. You cannot publicly piss on beloved, respected and prominent Black men, nationwide, by proclaiming you are the sole symbol of Black manhood and expect them and others to support you.
Secondly, Mayor Adams has repeatedly stated that he needs to be shown more respect, personally and professionally. From The G-Man would like Mayor Adams to take this into consideration. First responders and military personnel working in and outside of New York City help people and defend our country on a daily basis, but you never see them in churches or on news networks demanding praise or declaring themselves the most important people in the city or country, do you? For the record, they may truly feel they do not receive enough support from the public. Despite this, they get up, suit up, and put those feelings to the side in order to not only make a difference in this great city, but to save lives. In other words, they choose to shut up, step up, and simply do their jobs.
Additionally, From The G-Man has never heard Governor Kathy Hochul say ….”What the hell, people? More of you need to show me a greater level of respect. I’m Governor Kathy Hochul, damn it!” Even when critics attack and news organizations grill her, she simply focuses on governing and does her best to answer all questions calmly, directly and with a complete understanding of the relationship between politicians and the press.
Finally, From The G-Man has a responsibility to inform the mayor and the public that he is not the future of the Democratic Party. Sorry, dude! Have a Yoo-hoo. It will help soothe the pain of that reality. There is someone who is far more qualified for that role, and he is someone voters of color, young and old, would likely flock to if he ever announced he was running for president. He is calm, calculating and cool, and he is as intelligent, measured and politically savvy as Barack Obama. Simply put, he is “The Sultan of Swag.” Mayor Adams, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries is the future of the Democratic Party, not you. Period!
