NABJ Headquarters: Each year NABJ honors renowned African-American journalists who have made outstanding contributions to the industry. Since 1990, NABJ has more than 55 distinguished journalists into the Association’s Hall of Fame, including this year’s eight inductees. Bernard Shaw attended the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1963 to 1968. The venerable anchorman began his career in Chicago at WNUS TV, then later joined CBS News and ABC news, becoming its Capitol Hill Senior Correspondent. He had the distinction of serving in the US Marine Corps, in 1962, achieving the rank of Corporal, E-4. It was in the military that he developed a passion for the print media. Shaw retired from CNN in 2001 after being the face of the cable network since its inception in 1980. During that time, Shaw commanded the anchor desk and boldly steered the national conversation even when taking on positions of adversity. He is also remembered for his reporting on the 1991 Gulf War. Shaw moderated the October 2000 vice-presidential debate between Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman. From 1992 until his retirement, Shaw anchored CNN’s Inside Politics.
A Message for CNN Chairman and CEO Chris Licht
From The G-Man believes the problems facing CNN will only get worse. If recent reports are accurate, morale is extremely low within the organization and many are questioning your objectives. If not careful, you will find yourself in a position where respected journalists will leave the network for opportunities to present and promote quality journalism. Given the May 10 fiasco with the former president and the never-ending ratings plunge, no one in or outside of the news world would blame them if they decided to bounce and launch their own news platforms or partner with journalists who place great emphasis on ethics, honor and integrity in journalism. In fact, From The G-Man would urge them all, particularly those with deep pockets, to make that move if they take issue with how their bosses or networks are blurring the line between entertainment, news reporting and sensationalism.
The town hall with “45” has monumentally harmed CNN and its legacy. More importantly, it made U.S. Capitol police officers who were attacked and beaten extremely uncomfortable. It made 2020 poll workers who were threatened with death extremely uncomfortable. It made women who were sexually assaulted – but never obtained justice like E. Jean Carroll did – extremely uncomfortable. From The G-Man suspects you never even considered that, Mr. Licht. Right? You and your executives have forced millions in this country to question the network’s credibility and sustainability like never before, and it would not be surprising in the least if CNN Board members and stockholders are looking at you sideways after the 45 interview. The late, great Mr. Shaw must be rolling over in his grave. Does it make you proud to know that? Well, for the record, it really pisses this news site off! Mr. Turner, Mr. Shaw, and all those responsible for truly making CNN the most trusted name in news deserve better.
