C-SPAN: Defense Department Spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder confirms the Pentagon will deploy 1,500 active duty troops to the southern border for 90 days to supplement U.S. Custom and Border Protection efforts. Ryder says the troops will play no role in law enforcement activities, but will assist with ground-based detection and monitoring, data entry, and warehouse support until CBP hires contractors to fill the capabilities gap.
